Communication Skills Boot Camp

for

Northwestern Medicine

This program will build on the skills you developed in your previous work with us. We will focus on:

  • Analyzing your stakeholders, structuring your material and visualizing your storyline

  • Leveraging your physical delivery to engage your listeners with confidence and conviction

  • Responding constructively to challenging questions

The rest of this page explains how to prepare for the program and provides an overview of the sessions.

Choose material to bring to the program

Bring with you a meeting or presentation that will happen after the program.

  • It should be important to you because you will improve the content as well as your skills.

  • You will get the most out of the day if you challenge yourself, so bring in a meeting that involves some complexity — for example, the topic might be difficult to explain or there are very different points of view that need to be addressed.

  • You can bring work-in-progress. Do not script yourself or over-prepare. You will have preparation periods. Bring your laptop and any visual aids you would like to use.

Tell us who you are and what your goals are

Overview of the sessions

Opening

Discuss the challenging communication situations you face and link the agenda to them.

Morning session

We reinforce the preparation tools provided previously and — depending on which of our programs you have attended — introduce a few new ones.

Either way, you prepare your material by analyzing your stakeholders, deciding a plan, and creating a visual outline of your storyline.

Then you get feedback on your preparation.

You complete your morning practice by verbalizing an executive summary of your storyline.

Afternoon session

You role-play the meeting you prepared earlier, to bring the storyline to life, reinforce delivery skills, and increase listener engagement. We record a video.

One-to-one coaching

You review the video of your meeting privately with a coach.

Plan actions

You identify a few meetings over the next couple of weeks and plan the skills you will apply in each one to increase your chances of success.
